No, Matt Kepnes, aka Nomadic Matt, wasn't living off passive income when he set off on a one-year journey that morphed into an 18-month trek in faraway lands. However, upon his return in 2008, and two weeks after the warm glow of being back home in Boston had worn off, he realized that traveling was his passion and that being back home wasn't all that it was cracked up to be.

The digital nomad lifestyle became significantly more popular in recent years due to a number of factors. Internet connectivity becoming more widespread, even to rural areas, has helped people travel to more areas (digital nomad or otherwise).[8][22] Jobs becoming less location-dependent (such as graphic designers and writers) has also contributed to the ease of the digital nomad lifestyle.[22] There are some negative factors as well that cause people to become digital nomads. These include political unrest in their home countries, a high cost of living where they live, the diminishing of long-term employment, and more.[22]

My wife and I are digital nomads. We’ve been working from the road for a year and a half now. We’ve travelled all over North, Central and South America. We’re currently in Bali. My background is in software engineering and hers is in business development and marketing. We’ve had such an amazing experience we decided to start CodingNomads (http://codingnomads.co). CodingNomads teaches software engineering in incredible destinations around the world. Seeing as software engineering can so easily be a location-independent job, and the salary is more than enough to live and travel comfortably we decided to start sharing the skills and tools with anyone who’s interested. The characteristic that all digital nomads have in common is that they usually spend several months abroad each year, are constantly on the move, and earn an income while working online. A digital nomad can easily make an income of $12,000 per year and live a nice, cushy lifestyle in countries like Thailand or Bali in South East Asia. Take that same digital nomad to London, Paris, or Sydney, and that’s not going to work out so well. Location independence means nomads have true freedom thanks to healthy incomes that allow them to run their business from any city on the planet, even from the most expensive ones.

One of the best things about being a digital nomad is that you don’t need to generate a lot of money to get started. If you choose to spend your time in South East Asia, or most of the destinations in the workation guide, you’ll be able to enjoy a great quality of life for around $1000 a month. You’ll have to work a lot harder and make a load more money to achieve the same quality of life in most western countries.

Those times I just want to relax and do nothing while traveling are the times I’ve made my closest friends. Whether it was on a boat in Thailand, or walking into a hostel in Spain, when I least expected (or wanted) to meet people was when I met the best. And even though you may not see them for years, you still end up at their wedding, Christmas dinner, or family celebration. Distance and time cannot break the bonds you form on the road.
Anyone who's heading out on the road needs some serious skills that they can use to work remotely. Without online skills and no passive income, you'd be left merely to working in the local economy, which isn't the worst thing, but it also won't afford you with the right amount of income to continue traveling and enjoying the digital nomad lifestyle.

If you feel overwhelmed navigating the remote work industry, you can start by finding a location-based job or enroll at a university abroad. This path offers more structure and a safety net in case you decide digital nomadism isn’t right for you. The risk of failure with this path is much lower than becoming a freelancer, but it also means that your road to becoming a digital nomad can take longer. If you choose this method, you’ll need to secure a visa or resident permit. Countries like Canada and Australia offer working holiday visas so you can try out Vancouver or Perth while getting used to living abroad.

Many digital nomads tend to come from more developed nations with passports allowing a greater degree of freedom of travel. As a result, many tend to travel on a tourist visa.[29] While it is technically illegal for a digital nomad to work in a country on a tourist visa, many digital nomads tend to reside in locations with a lower cost of living while working remotely on projects outside their country of residence. In most countries, as long as the nomad is discreet and is not taking a job away from a local person, the authorities will turn a blind eye to nomad work. Visa runs are also often common in the digital nomad community. Some nomads have also attempted to legalize their stay by taking up part-time jobs in teaching English as well as taking university courses in their host country. In addition, digital nomads are often using their status as permanent travelers to escape the tax liability in their home countries without, however, immigrating to the tax system of another country.[30] Nevertheless, this practice is considered controversial amongst digital nomads.

Still, passive income involves a lot of pain. No, I'm not talking about joining some get-rich-quick system by some raving internet marketer "who did it so you can do it too." Don't buy into the hype. If you've already had a fast one pulled on you, then I apologize. One bad apple certainly can spoil the bunch. And although some internet marketers aren't entirely ethical, not all of them are like that.

No matter how you achieve your passive income goals, without it, you'll have a far harder time traveling the world and becoming a digital nomad. If you're just starting out in a career that enables you to telecommute or do work for clients virtually, then you're one step ahead. You could potentially spend your time anywhere in the world that could accommodate your longed-after nomadic lifestyle.

All you need to do is type your desired profession and job type into your internet machine’s search bar and BAM – hundreds of search results pop up for you to choose from. This is largely thanks to the websites of gig economy heavyweights like Upwork, Remote.co and Freelancer.com. These websites are places where businesses seeking part-time, ad hoc work post adverts for freelancers to apply. It’s like a Craigslist for work.

Common remote work skills include things like writing, marketing, and computer design or engineering. If you’re a developer, you’ll want to look for jobs building out the front or back end of websites. Teaching English online is another great option for native English speakers and companies like VIPKID make it easier than ever to find clients and become a digital nomad. With enough hours and repeat clients, you can even turn teaching English into a full-time job.

Paying for things that don’t greatly impact your life is never ideal. That’s why you need to get rid of all the expenses that you won’t need living as a digital nomad. Things like gym memberships, subscriptions, and debt are all expenses that’ll bog you down on the road. And if you’re a freelancer, they’ll be even more of a burden because you might experience some periods of inconsistent income. Getting rid of these expenses and paying off debt will allow you to fully focus on your work and travels.

The first step on the road to digital nomadism is to start recognizing which things in your life are tying you to one specific location. Long-term leases on apartments or vehicles are often the first things that need to be addressed. You’ll also want to start eliminating expenses like gym memberships and subscription services to free up your income for the things you really need when you’re on the road. Being a digital nomad usually means travelling light so you’ll want to get rid of junk and material things that don’t serve an important purpose in your life.
Your debt and expenses: If you're in serious debt, you'll find it hard to become a digital nomad. The burden on your shoulders is too high and if you're stuck without income for a week or months, you'll struggle to keep your head above water. You need to handle your debt first. Pay it down by doubling the minimum payments on the highest interest rates loans or credit cards until they're paid off, then moving onto the next ones.

Justin and his wife have been living, working, and traveling across America in a Ford F-250 with an Airstream trailer hitched to its back for the past two years. And their alternative lifestyle has helped them prioritize life experiences and close connections over material possessions. They’re modern day nomads. Or what most people call digital nomads.
However, it isn't just about passive income. There are definitely digital nomads that live on an active income. If travel is what you're after, and you're interested in living, working and immersing yourself in another culture far away from home, you could do it on an active income. It involves jumping through more hoops and flying by the proverbial seat of your pants, but you can do it.

However, as modern society has dawned, and the proverbial rat race has gripped most in a state of the survival of the fittest, and the hedonistic pleasures and impulses to satisfy our sudden urges to keep up with the Jones' have amplified with each passing decade, the ensuing Hedonic Treadmill has stifled and suffocated most that dream of greener pastures and a life of leisure.

Whatever lifestyle you pursue, it’s always smart to have safety net. You never know when an emergency will arise. This rings especially true when you’re a digital nomad because you’re mostly own your own. You can’t find solace in a warm, comfortable home or family, and if you’re freelancer, you don’t have the luxury of a consistent paycheck. To widen your safety net, you should sell any unnecessary belongings, move the essentials into a storage unit, sell or rent your house, and save as much money as possible.

Okay, you can always opt to teach English if you really do get stuck somewhere during your travels and you're in a true bind to make ends meet. This is less straightforward since you'll have to get out there and contact local schools where you can offer your services. However, don't expect to earn much. You'll be looking at local wages here. If you're in a developing country, that's not going to be much money in your pocket.

Another great passive income source is to create online courses. Depending on what your skill set is, you can create online courses in a variety of areas. You can teach pretty much anything. It all boils down to how well you structure the course and the actual sales funnel associated with it. Or, you could go with a site like Udemy where you don't have to worry too much about the sales and marketing side of things.

One of the most common questions we get from new members in our community is how to be a digital nomad. People see pictures on social media of remote workers sitting on a white sand beach, laptop in hand, making an income and immediately wonder how they can do that too. So, we created a rough guideline to help you find ways to be location independent.

The truth? We spend a lot of our time, energy and financial resources paying for that which we've already acquired. And why not? We're living the American Dream, aren't we? Get it now and pay for it later. That's always been the motto. However, it's that mentality that's driven a large part of the population into a state of compliance and complacency, unable to extricate themselves from the shackles of debt and their 9-to-5 obligations

If you already have a freelance business or a remote gig that generates passive income, you can skip those first few steps and just take your work on the road. Alternatively, if you have some cash saved up, you can buy an established online business and get a jump-start. Websites like Flippa make it easy to find online businesses that are for sale and how much revenue they generate. Successful digital nomads are a diverse group consisting of both people who own their own companies and others who seek out potential clients online or work random jobs on the road as they move around.

Creativity happens when you mash seemingly unrelated concepts together to form a new idea. Neuroscientists call this synaptic play, and the more incongruent the concepts are, the more synapses occur in your brain. Working in a different place everyday gives you a lot of diverse experiences that you call pull from to make these creative connections. And when your brain is chock full of these diverse inputs, your ideas are much more inventive.

Once you’ve figured out what skills you have that will enable you to work remotely, you need to find a job. Arguably the easiest way to do this is to scour remote specific job sites. Luckily, there are now tons of sites online like We Work Remotely and RemoteOk that post only jobs that are remote or location independent. Check out UpWork, formerly known as ODesk, to find freelance gigs for everything from virtual assistants and photographers to accountants and consultants.

One of the earliest known uses of the term digital nomad originally was in 1997. It was the title of a book published by educational publishing company Wiley. It was written by Tsugio Makimoto and David Manners. It is unknown if the phrase was coined in this book or if they took a term that had already existed.[4] Digital nomads can use wireless Internet, smartphones, Voice over IP, and/or cloud-based applications to work remotely where they live or travel.[5][6] Digital nomads may use co-working spaces, cafes, house sitting agreements, and shared offices.[7] The foundation of the digital nomad movement is remote work, allowing people to do their work at home or otherwise through the Internet.[8] Digital nomads may also sell a number of possessions in order to make travel easier, and may also sell or rent their house.[9]

As good as it sounds to travel the world and live in amazing places, you also need to keep in mind that this lifestyle is not going to last forever! I’m starting to see a trend of digital nomads returning to their home countries. Even those that have lived and loved the lifestyle for many years now. Some people work and travel for 6 months, others for 10 years but none of us will do it forever. Keep this in mind before you spend all of your time and energy taking this path.
This article is completely true. There are benefits and drawbacks to becoming a digital nomad. It’s also not neeearly as hard is it looks. I’ve found being a web designer and developer to be the best possible outcome for living as a digital nomad.
