One of the most common questions we get from new members in our community is how to be a digital nomad. People see pictures on social media of remote workers sitting on a white sand beach, laptop in hand, making an income and immediately wonder how they can do that too. So, we created a rough guideline to help you find ways to be location independent.

lista de embalagem Digital Nomad

If you feel overwhelmed navigating the remote work industry, you can start by finding a location-based job or enroll at a university abroad. This path offers more structure and a safety net in case you decide digital nomadism isn’t right for you. The risk of failure with this path is much lower than becoming a freelancer, but it also means that your road to becoming a digital nomad can take longer. If you choose this method, you’ll need to secure a visa or resident permit. Countries like Canada and Australia offer working holiday visas so you can try out Vancouver or Perth while getting used to living abroad.
Spend a few hours and learn the Korean alphabet (not that hard) and Google some names of Korean dishes + it's spelling in Korean. It will help a lot as most restaurants only have Korean menu's and often without pictures. As mentioned previously on the reviews, it's a little hard to eat alone, but Gimbab Chonguk (김밥천국) is everywhere and 24/7 - no one will bat an eye. Also look for places that "specialises" in dumplings, They are usually "alone-eating" friendly. And so are ramen places as well as Korean "chinese" restaurants - Jajangmyeon (자장면) is very good and super addictive. Bibimbab restaurant places are fine too. Actually, it's not that hard to eat alone in Korea. The "group" meals are generally quite obvious and will be things like BBQ. You'll figure it out. Do Get used to kimchi and spicy food otherwise you'll end up eating the same thing all the time. Be adventurous. Challenge yourself and eat an octopus alive (산낙지). If you're really brave try 보신탕 before authorities close them all - I haven't but a lot of Weagukins (foreigners) secret do. Cafe's generally have really good wifi, as you would expect from one of the most connected countries in the world. Expect to pay $4-6 for a latte and maybe even more at Starbucks. Best cafe's are usually around Hipster areas and Universities. Indie owned cafe's are awesome. Nightlife is great, probably amongst the best in Asia. Can get very expensive especially at night clubs in Gangnam where it would could be like $10 for a beer - in that case you can still get drunk for $2 with soju just outside at 7Eleven. Winters are stupidly cold and summers can be brutally hot & humid. Go between April and June or September to October. They have cherry blossoms in spring which is beautiful and so are the autumn leaves. Lived here for many years. It's a cool place and vastly underrated. Seoul is continuously becoming more expensive and cost of living will soon be comparable with places like Tokyo.

If an adventurous lifestyle sounds appealing to you, then being a digital nomad can be one of the most rewarding yet challenging ways to live. But if you arm yourself with organization, discipline, and a thirst for learning, you could enjoy an exciting and fulfilling life on the road. Just ask Justin and Ariele Champion. They’re living the alternative American Dream. And they've never looked back.
If you already have a freelance business or a remote gig that generates passive income, you can skip those first few steps and just take your work on the road. Alternatively, if you have some cash saved up, you can buy an established online business and get a jump-start. Websites like Flippa make it easy to find online businesses that are for sale and how much revenue they generate. Successful digital nomads are a diverse group consisting of both people who own their own companies and others who seek out potential clients online or work random jobs on the road as they move around.

Still, passive income involves a lot of pain. No, I'm not talking about joining some get-rich-quick system by some raving internet marketer "who did it so you can do it too." Don't buy into the hype. If you've already had a fast one pulled on you, then I apologize. One bad apple certainly can spoil the bunch. And although some internet marketers aren't entirely ethical, not all of them are like that.

Those times I just want to relax and do nothing while traveling are the times I’ve made my closest friends. Whether it was on a boat in Thailand, or walking into a hostel in Spain, when I least expected (or wanted) to meet people was when I met the best. And even though you may not see them for years, you still end up at their wedding, Christmas dinner, or family celebration. Distance and time cannot break the bonds you form on the road.

Passive income, by far, is the most important financial tool that will afford you the freedom to not only receive income automatically, every single month, without fail, but it'll also give you the means to have a flexible schedule to spend time with your family and children or wander the world as a digital nomad, choosing to work when you please, on your own schedule.

Digital Nomad communities like Couchsurfing and Nomadlist will help you learn the nuances of the digital nomad lifestyle, and reduce its steep learning curve. Another great way to get your foot in the door of the freelance world is proofreading. There is so much written content being produced and released daily which means the pool for work is only increasing, which is great. You’ll be primarily looking out for spelling and grammar issues and sometimes content. It’s not for everyone but if you enjoy reading up on loads of different and interesting things you might as well get paid for it.
One of the best things about being a digital nomad is that you don’t need to generate a lot of money to get started. If you choose to spend your time in South East Asia, or most of the destinations in the workation guide, you’ll be able to enjoy a great quality of life for around $1000 a month. You’ll have to work a lot harder and make a load more money to achieve the same quality of life in most western countries.

All over the world, I have encountered amazing people who have not only changed my life but have gone out of their way to help me. It’s taught me that the old saying is true: you can always depend on the kindness of strangers. We grow up in this culture of fear in America that is unrealistic. but 99.999999% of the people in the world aren’t murders, rapists, or thieves. There’s no reason to assume someone is one. Sometimes, people are just trying to be friendly.

If I had tried to build a location independent business back home in Germany instead of South Africa the salaries would have been way too tempting and I would probably have a 9-5 job in the tourism industry right now. In Cape Town, where I lived at that time, I needed less money to enjoy a good quality of life. That’s why it can give you extra motivation to build a location independent business abroad where you can enjoy a better quality of life on a lower salary than in your home country.

You can also try convincing your boss to let you take your current job on the road. To be successful with this approach, you’ll need to do some advance preparation: draft a proposal that addresses all of the important aspects of your job and how you’ll transition them to a remote position without losing momentum. Make sure to outline any areas of concern and take a look at remote management tools like Slack that can make communicating with your colleagues easier. These days, many office jobs can be performed remotely with the right planning, communication, and trust between employees and managers.
There are so many professions being catered to on these sites, from writers, marketing directors, video editors to human resources managers and even legal whizzes. If you can do the work remotely, they will be included in these sites. If you don’t have any professional experience or qualification that is fine too. You can apply for jobs which require beginner, intermediate or advanced levels of competency.

Okay, you can always opt to teach English if you really do get stuck somewhere during your travels and you're in a true bind to make ends meet. This is less straightforward since you'll have to get out there and contact local schools where you can offer your services. However, don't expect to earn much. You'll be looking at local wages here. If you're in a developing country, that's not going to be much money in your pocket.
I always had a passion for travel, but that would not be the main reason for being digital nomadic. I currently have an office job thats getting me nowhere and not allowing me to build new skills (we’ve been under a freeze for 10 years) so if there’s no room for advancement, there’s no point in me being there. My salary is not high enough to stay afloat, and I already have established other streams of income, including freelance writing. I have a travel blog which I started about 6 months ago, and have worked on monetizing it with Google adsense and affiliate links. I have submitted some of my recent travel articles to some magazines, and hopefully they will get published. Eventually I hope to be able to take up travel writing/blogging full time and leave that dead-end office job!
